The Government of Gujarat is organizing the 4th Global Investors' Summit on 12-13 January 2009. Aimed at bringing together business leaders, investors, corporations, thought leaders, policy and opinion makers; the summit serves as a perfect platform to understand and explore business opportunities in the State of Gujarat.

A biennial event, Vibrant Gujarat: Global Investors' Summit has had resounding successes in the past attracting several companies from Asia and Europe to establish their presence in Gujarat. The 2003 Global Investors' Summit was held coinciding with the glorious Navratri Festival where a total of 76 MOUs worth USD 14 billion were signed. The 2005 Summit saw signing of 226 MOUs garnering an investment of USD 20 billion. The year 2007 Summit, attended by industry majors like Tata, Birla, Reliance, Shell, General Motors, ICICI to name a few resulted in signing of 675 MOUs worth USD 152 billion.

In the year 2009, the initiative that began six years ago, will be intensified and the state shall propel in to the next stage of the development process… focused and intensive growth in the socio-economic index.

Euro Group to set up 100 MW solar project

Euro Ceramics Limited is planning to set up State’s first 100 MW solar project at village Lakadia Shivlakha near Bhachau in Kutch district. For the purpose, the company has applied to the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) for getting necessary permission, which they expect to receive soon, the sources said. In the initial stage, the company proposes to set up a 5 MW solar-based power plant with an estimated capital outlay of Rs.100 crore. The total project cost for 100 MW plant is estimated at Rs.2,000 crore. To establish the project, 400 acres of land has already been acquired by the company. The project is proposed to be set up on infertile land, the sources added.

Jindal Group to set up facilities for high capacity rail wagons at Dahej

Jindal Saw Limited through its subsidiary company viz. Jindal Rail Infrastructure Limited (J R I L) plans to set up a modern Wagon manufacturing facility near Dahej. For the purpose, the company has recently acquired 120 acres site - within a distance range of 30 km from the existing Jindal Shipyard owned by India Maritime Technology Park (IMTP). The company proposes to manufacture wagons for deployment in the domestic and overseas sectors. Talking about the unique features of the wagon design, the company sources said that JRIL manufactured wagons could carry 10% more load compared to the traditional wagons – without increasing the load on the railway tracks. The company has scheduled commencement of the production by September 2009. In the first year, the company plans to produce 2000 specialty wagons, which will gradually be increased to 7000 in the next five years. The company also has plans to develop ancillary units producing various components required for wagon manufacturing near the location, at a later stage.

SG Highway – An Emerging C R O Hub

Following outsourcing of Clinical Research Work from the West, India is becoming a choice destination for the CRO Sector. Ahmedabad’s SG Highway will house about a dozen such Clinical Research Organisations. Prominent amongst them are Quintiles Research (India) Private Limited, BA Research India Limited, Accutest, Intas Biopharmaceuticals Limited, Lamda Therapeutic Research Limited, Zydus BSV Pharma Private Limited who have set up their facilities on Sarkhej-Gandhinagar highway near Ahmedabad. Reliance Lifescience, Claris Lifesciences, Nicolas Piramal and Veeda Clinical Research too will have their facilities here , industry sources said. Pharma companies choose India as the destination for a reason that Indians being of pure race, mainly because of less number of inter-caste marriages. Today, Gujarat is the home to nearly 40% of India’s Clinical Research Organisations housing 20 major CROs. Due to the availability of large plots of land at reasonable prices, proximity to the renowned hospitals for emergency medical help and less congestion compared to other parts of the city are some of the factors making SG highway a preferred location for a CRO, the sources added.

Opportunity to state pharma and chemical sector to demonstrate strength

Under the aegis of Vibrant Gujarat 2009, a three-day exhibition is planned in Ahmedabad in March, 2009. The event - InformEx India 2009 jointly organised by the State Government, United Business Media and the industry is expected to bring about 150 companies and 8000 participants on one platform and would provide immense opportunities to the pharmaceutical industry in widening their network and increasing exports, said State Health and Family Welfare Minister. A high profile conclave of CEOs from pharmaceutical and chemical industries will be held on January 13, 2009, during Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors’ Summit 2009, which will be followed by InformEx India 2009, a government official said. An MoU was signed by Gujarat Government, United Business Media and pharmaceutical and chemical industry for organising the exhibition. Various associations viz.. IDMA, PHARMEXCIL, CAMA ISCMA, IPA and BDMA are expected to actively participate in the event, the sources informed.

GSPC finds another Gas Reserve in KG Basin

On the eastern coast of hydro-carbon rich Kaveri-Godavari basin, Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation has discovered gas in yet another new well of deepwater block of KG 22. The company is in the process of submitting a development plan with the Directorate General of Hydrocarbon for producing 6 trillion cubic feet of gas from the earlier discovery in Deendayal block.

EDS outsourcing offers new career opportunities in Gujarat

Following the fall in availability of engineering graduates in the US and European countries, and increasing availability of engineering graduates in India, the country is emerging as an important centre for EDS sourcing. Presently, Gujarat produces 22000 engineers trained in different disciplines every year. Apart from the engineering graduates, those trained in the areas like computer-aided designing and other areas of engineering design are also being benefited from the emergence of the new area of outsourcing. Recently, Icenet Technologies - an Ahmedabad- based company re-ventured into EDS outsourcing business under Icecube brand, to provide training to newly recruited engineers, as per the requirements of their US and European clients. A captive unit of US based engineering services providing company – KJWW Engineering India employs 60 engineers, plans to increase the strength to 90 by the end of the year. L & T Technology Park going to come up near Vadodara will have a 5000-seat EDS outsourcing unit, which will be scaled up to 10000-seat unit in next few years, it is reported.
